There are basically three types of awnings available.

The Non cassetted.
The Semi Cassetted
The Fully or Total Cassetted

Firstly and normally the cheapest version is the Non Cassetted type, this means that the awning fabric and the arms are not protected from the elements when in the closed position, they are normally mounted under some type of ledge or parapit,they can be fitted with a weather protection pelmet, but if you feel that this is needed then it might be worth looking at a semi cassetted awning.

Next is the Semi Cassette
This means that the cover and the barrel are protected when in the closed position but not the actual arms of the awning, these are semi protected from the elements by virtue of being located under the barrel.

Lastly we come to the Fully or Total Cassetted awning, this is virtually always the most expensive option, and as its name implies totally encloses the fabric & arms when in its closed position, giving it total protection from the elements,especially over the winter months, it also stops birds fouling the fabric and possibly even nesting in it.
